2009 Javafish Charter Letter

Happy Spring! It seemed like winter never would end.  We made it through the worst of it and now it is time to think fishing.  If you are like me, I think fishing all the time, and cannot stop fishing when it gets cold.  In the past two off-seasons I have filled my time with my two children and with Ohio Steelhead fishing.

Ohio has outstanding Steelhead fishing if you are looking for a new place to fish.  Sadly, these fish do not frequent our end of the lake due to the shallow water and warm temps.  In 2008, we hooked & quickly lost two Steelhead. Several were taken out of our marina.   Thankfully, Walleye make up for any shortfalls we have with other fish in our area.

We are counting on a good Walleye season this summer out of our homeport – Toledo Beach Marina.  There continues to be a large contingency of 2003 class Walleye in the lake with 2005/2006 class fish mixed in also.   This year is going to be like 2008 where we need to fish harder to pull limits, with quality being the norm.

Our Walleye season is going to kick off May 30 and run through August 1, 2009 at Toledo Beach.  June and July have historically been the best two months to fish.  In 2008, we ran to Ohio on many trips, which resulted in near or full limits on many trips.  We also caught a horde of smaller “cigar-sized” Walleye – a promising sign for next year.

I am currently exploring expanding my charter business to include fall Walleye & Perch fishing out of Huron or Vermillion, OH.   These ports, both east of Sandusky, offer outstanding fishing action from September through ice up.  This is a quantity and trophy Walleye fishery all in one.  Ten-pound Walleye are not uncommon, and Perch run larger as well.  We would fish one trip a day for 8 hours, departing at 7:30 am, and would structure the trip based upon your preference.  Should I move the boat this direction, I would be fishing only on weekends.  We would start fishing in Huron/Vermillion on September 1 and end by November 1, 2009.  From the south end of Detroit, it is a two-hour drive to the dock.  I would love to hear from you if you are curious about coming in the fall!

This will by my third year running the “Kingfisher”, a 32’ Coastal, owned by Captain Doug Reckling.  My boat is still on blocks pending my decision to make a significant investment to repair the vessel.  As you can imagine, now is not the best time to be investing in boat repairs. Captain Doug has been deep in a fight for his life with Hodgkin’s disease and has been unable to participate in the business since 2007.  Please keep him in your prayers! His son, Bryce, will be my faithful companion and first-mate this summer.  For those of you who have not met Bryce, he is a very talented deck hand.  He is quick, social, and dedicated to charter excellence.

Please call soon to secure your date(s), and be sure to send your deposit to me if you have already booked a date.

Thanks,

Captain Scott
